Bikeathons and other athletic events have been runaway success for fund-raisers in recent years. Twenty years ago, a surgeon in Tacoma, Wash., came up with the quixotic idea of running around a track for 24 hours to raise money for the fight against cancer. After collecting $27,000 in pledges, he realized he could multiply donations by forming teams to run a relay. From that humble start, the American Cancer Society's Relay For Life has mushroomed.
